Recently, the US and Canadian governments updated travelers’ requirements to their countries due to the pandemic. Upon the requirements, they included a proof of non-infection by SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) using a viral test to prove that, with no more than 72 hours of been taken. Here we give you useful information to ease the process and decide which will be the best test for you.
Viral tests for COVID-19: PCR and antigen tests
The PCR is one of the most common tests to detect COVID, this test DNA sample (obtained with a swab into the nose). It’s the most accurate because it can detect the virus’s DNA with a small number of copies of the virus inside the sample.
The processing time usually takes between 24 and 48 hours*.
Regular PCR: The cost is 3,000 pesos (For travelers). If the sample is taken before 10:00 am, the results will be ready on the next day in the afternoon (maximum 8:00 pm).
Urgent PCR: If the sample is taken before 10:00 am, the results will be ready on the same day in the afternoon (around 11:00 pm). Cost (For travelers): 4,000 pesos.
*Valid only for samples taken Monday to Friday. For example, If the sample is collected Saturday morning (before 10 am), results will be ready Monday afternoon (max. 8 pm). Please send us a message if you need more information on complying with your flights’ requirements.
The PCR is accepted within the requirements for travelers to the US, Canada, and other countries (i.e., Colombia).
The antigen test is one of the best tests for screening the virus in the population since it is faster and costs less than the PCR. This test detects antigens (proteins of the virus’s capsule are the most common antigens). When you take the sample, you just need to add antibodies that detect the antigens, and if there is a reaction, it means that the sample has the virus. The antigen tests are less effective than PCR because they depend on the number of copies of the virus inside the sample (nasal swab). Nonetheless, it’s a good option to detect people with the virus within large groups. This test’s primary benefit is the fast processing time. We recommend making the antigen test two days before the flight in case of a positive result.
Antigen test: The cost is 995 pesos. The results will be done on the same day.
The antigen test is currently only accepted for travelers to the US according to CDC regulations.

Doctor at Home PV service:
To ease the process, you can contact us to make an appointment, and we can go and collect the sample at your home or help you find the nearest laboratory to you.
The sample collection at home has a cost of 500 pesos in the Puerto Vallarta Area (see coverage areas in this link). This visit includes up to 4 samples collected on the same date and site. If you have a bigger group, send us a message for cost. We’ll also inform you of any updates on the traveling requirements, and we’ll track your results.
What if you recently recovered from COVID-19?
“CDC does not recommend getting tested again in the three months after a positive viral test, as long as you do not have symptoms of COVID-19. If you have had a positive viral test in the past 3 months, and you have met the criteria to end isolation, travel with a copy of your positive test result and a letter from your doctor or health department that states you have been cleared for travel.”
We can help you with a medical check-up and the emission of the letter too. The cost of this consult is 600 pesos for each patient.
This option it’s only valid for travel back to the USA
